MAN AS ART
These portraits are a selection from my book, MAN AS ART: NEW GUINEA (The Viking Press, NY, 1981). Separate editions, each with different titles, were also published in the UK, France, Germany and Italy. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis acclaimed it as being, “…one of the most beautiful books I have seen in my life.”
The work is the culmination of seven trips I made to to Papua New Guinea between 1967-1980 documenting the art of self-decoration, together with other facets of the island’s tribal cultures. The photographs are now in the permanent collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, Department of Oceanic Art).
